Registration

8:00 – 8:20am
Introduction and welcome

8:20 – 8:45am

Know your surroundings: The state of coding 2009

Gain a comprehensive understanding of recent updates from CMS, get data on code changes, and learn about Attachment D fallout and what it all means to your agency.  This is the “big picture” of proper coding and communication under constantly changing rules.

8:45 – 9:30am

On point: Top intermediary coding denial trends

Regional Home Health Intermediary denials continue to increase due to incorrect coding, which can trigger medical edits.  There are edits out on V58.6x, COPD and many others.  Find out what the intermediaries are looking for so you can code correctly the first time.

9:30 – 10:15am

Get your bearings: Case mix and M0246

CMS had four different sets of guidance for M0246 in a 12-month period, and the trend won’t stop there! Get your bearings on how resolved and unresolved conditions work with this M0 item, what is forbidden, how comorbidities play in and how to code correctly to get the highest reimbursement.

10:15 – 10:30am

Break

10:30 – 11:30am

Crossing paths: Intersection of risk adjustment, outcomes and coding

Risk adjustment, outcomes and coding are key indicators that influence money, show patient results and lead to an accurate reflection of patient history. Learn the hows and whys

11:30am – 12:15pm

Interactive session / Q&A

12:15 – 1:30pm

Lunch

Choose your trail: Ascend with your colleagues in interactive sessions

1:30 – 5:00pm

Beginner’s trek

Trek through critical thinking on V codes, diabetes and neoplasms.

V codes: Coded often and often coded incorrectly; learn V code sequencing.

Diabetes: Unravel the complexities of diabetes coding.

Neoplasms: Cancer, masses, lumps and benign tumors. Coding neoplasms includes specificity and primary and secondary coding based on metastatic issues.  Learn the important role of the Neoplasm Table in the coding process.

1:30 – 5:00pm

Experienced trek

Trek further into V codes, diabetes and neoplasms.

V Codes: Focus on the three main categories of status, aftercare and history, complication code issues, sequencing, and working with the new guidance on risk-adjusted V codes.

Diabetes: Mistakes are often made with manifestations and multiple manifestation coding; learn the potential coding changes with amputations or bypasses.

Neoplasms: A look at specificity issues, cancer in transplanted organs, history codes and proper use, and the newer V07.5x series.

5:00 – 6:30pm

Get HCS-D certified

The Summit is a great place to take your Home Care Coding Specialist – Diagnosis (HCS-D) certification or recertification exam. Bonus: A special study session for HCS-D candidates will be held before the exam date. The test will be at 9:00am on Friday, August 14, 2009, at the hotel. Also, learn about BMSC’s new ICD-9 basics exam for beginning coders and clinicians!
