Private duty companies continued to ride the waves of increasing revenue
and steady profit during 2006. But beware of a gathering storm.
Agencies are leaking about 30% of their staff each year, and the diluted
supply of caregivers could end up raining on your parade, PDI's
annual Private Duty Home Care Survey confirms.
With demand expected to increase as baby boomers age, agencies will
have to devise new ways to recruit and retain qualified caregivers or risk
losing lucrative cases they don't have the ability to staff, warns Nancy
Ruma, director of Pathways Private Duty in Sunnyvale, Calif.
For Ruma, this means turning down requests for the casual "tuck
and fluff" services that are core offerings at most private duty companies,
she says.
